Introduction
APL is a device that provides internal compensation of the dysfunctional refractive condition of the eye to reduce or eliminate the patient’s dependence on glasses or contact lens.
Why is it called Adtec Phakic IO Lens?
- Because the eye’s natural lens is left untouched.
- Unlike routine IOLs that are implanted into eyes after removing Natural cataract and crystalline lens during Cataract Surgery
Features
With Central Flow
Central hole that enables more physiologic aqueous circulation through the pupil to the anterior chamber, thus eliminating the need for a peripheral iridectomy.
Benefits of Adtec Phakic Lens
- Able to correct high degrees of myopia
- Mainly useful in treating high myopia from -3.0D to -2.3D in young patients
- Performed on patients who are not candidates for LASIK
- No loss in the patients’ ability to accommodate
Radial Profile of APL
The Adtec APL was designed to provide space between the posterior chamber phakic IOL and the anterior surface of the crystalline lens so they do not touch but allow fluid.
Adtec APL is vaulted, with no contact with the posterior iris and the crystalline lens, to avoid the possibility of late complications such as pigmentary dispersion syndrome and a complicated cataract.
Reduces optical distortion and higher order aberration
Proponents of the procedure say the Adtec APL provides sharper vision than laser vision correction surgery. The manufacturing process for phakic IOLs reduces the risk of optical distortions and higher-order aberrations that can be caused by laser procedures, especially when correction for high amounts of myopia is needed.
No Dry Eye
Because no corneal tissue is removed during the phakic IOL procedure, there is no risk of dry eye problems caused by damage to delicate nerves in the cornea that are important in maintaining an adequate tear layer on the eye.
Fully Reversible
An advantage of Adtec APL is that if complications arise, the implantable lenses can be removed or replaced if necessary. Unlike LASIK, PRK, and other laser surgeries, Adtec APL IOL surgery is fully reversible.
Contrast sensitivity and smaller acuity
APL surgery appears to result in better contrast sensitivity than excimer laser correction for moderate to high myopia. APL IOL surgery also scored higher on patient satisfaction/preference questionnaires. Studies reflect the compared corneal ablative procedures with APL IOL results in patients and found better outcomes for contrast sensitivity and smaller acuity with APL.
Adtec APL Toric IOLs
The Adtec APL Toric reduced preoperative spherical and astigmatic errors with high predictability and good stability and was associated with extremely good visual outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The use of Adtec APL Toric has advantages over Corneal procedures.
Adtec APL Toric has excellent predictability and stability for the correction of moderate to high myopic astigmatism.
Adtec APL Toric is an effective means for improving visual functional quality of life in highly ametropic children who have difficulties wearing spectacles.
APL Materials
Hybrid Version (A)
APL are made of an advanced material that is extremely biocompatible and provides superior optical performance.
APL are easy to implant in the eye because of the soft and flexible structure and they feel natural in the eye.
Version (B)
The unique material contains a small amount of collogen, which provides excellent biocompatibiltity.
The single piece, soft, elastic, and hydrophilic collagen copolymer Adtec APL is composed of a polymer and collagen
